Friends described Mulai as a “gentle giant.” Nicole Estrella said, “He would just put a smile on your face. For one, he always had a smile on his face. He was always cheesing with a grin on his face.”

Estrella knew Mulai growing up. They met in middle school and then went to Ridgeview High School together, where Mulai played basketball.

Estrella said she was shocked to hear the news that he was stabbed to death Thursday.

“I was just shocked the way it happened. Like I say he was a gentle giant. Like he was just someone respectful,” she told Action News Jax’s Robert Grant.

Police said Mulai and Jamerson knew each other. Investigators were at the scene at 9000 Tapestry Park Circle for hours.

Neighbors described seeing bloodstains and evidence markers at the scene of the crime in one of the breezeways outside the apartments.

Estrella said her heart breaks for Mulai’s 3-year-old son.

“You could tell he just wanted to do the best he could for his son, always,” she said. “He was always just trying to give him the world.”

According to court documents, there were no previous incidents between the suspect and victim.

Jamerson had no previous arrests.
