Health expert says social distancing has flattened the curve, but surge in cases is still to come

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Northeast Florida hospitals are beginning to see a spike in coronavirus cases. However, some health experts believe the surge in cases may be a month away, estimating mid to late May.

“The height of the curve has diminished in all the prediction models, Dr. David Caro with UF Health in Jacksonville said. “In the newer prediction models, it has spread it out so that our peak now is moving more into mid and late May as projected, as opposed to where it was originally, if you remember late April beginning of May.”

Dr. Caro said social distancing is working to slow the spread of the coronavirus, and therefore delaying the surge in cases.

”The good trade-off is that cuts down on the number of folks that would die without getting appropriate care. We’ll still have deaths because of COVID, but now we’ll have the ability to apply the full force of all the care we can provide, as opposed to having to ration it out," Dr. Caro said.
