JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Mayor Lenny Curry addressed the ongoing issue about missed trash collections in Jacksonville during a news conference.
The city has received several calls and emails in the past few months from residents across the area upset about missed or delayed waste collection and their taxpayer dollars that are being spent. Curry expressed he understands the frustration.
City officials noted that the issue is more than a Jacksonville issue, but a national one brought on by labor shortage amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Curry said waste haulers can’t keep up with the demand and that’s causing the backlog in waste collection.

On Monday, Oct. 4, the city began temporarily suspending curbside recycling. The suspension is to allow the city to get caught up on the backlog of garbage and yard waste pickup.
“This was a difficult decision. I know this is not a perfect solution and that many people in our community are passionate about recycling. This is why we’re standing up 15 recycling sites throughout the city where residents can bring their item for collection,” Curry said.
Action News Jax reported when Curry said he was considering pausing recycling pickup. The mayor chose to prioritize waste collection due to the sanitary risk it can impose.
