UPDATE: 103rd Street back open after being shut down for hours due to crash, robbery investigation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE 3/10/2021 9:40 P.M.:

103rd St. was shut down for several hours while investigators were on scene, and finally reopened around 9:30 p.m.

According to JSO, the robbery unit, traffic homicide unit, crime unit, and FBI were all on scene investigating the incident.

UPDATE 3/10/2021 8:11 P.M.:

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, a male suspect walked into the Vystar Credit Union on 103rd St. with a firearm, demanding money.

JSO responded to the scene and as they were pulling into the parking lot, they saw the suspect exiting the building, carrying a firearm.

The suspect quickly got into a white Lexus and fled the scene.

JSO immediately recognized the vehicle was the same one reported stolen earlier today.

As the suspect fled, JSO began a pursuit, and the suspect started firing shots at the JSO officers while continue to drive erratically. Thankfully, no one was hit by the gunfire.

The suspect eventually came to a stop when he crossed over into the eastbound lane on 103rd St. driving westbound and crashed into a pick-up truck head-on.

A JSO patrol vehicle then crashed into the two vehicles, and another patrol car blocked the suspect’s vehicle in so he could not escape in reverse.

The suspect was taken into custody immediately following the crash.

There were two passengers in the pick-up truck, a grandfather and granddaughter, who JSO said was a child. They were both transported to a near by hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A JSO officer and the suspect were also transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

Part of westbound 103rd Street is shut down due to police activity related to a bank robbery investigation and reported crash.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is asking motorists to avoid 103rd between Shindler Drive and Rockola Road.

A bicyclist told Action News Jax’s Christy Turner that one of the vehicles involved in the crash appeared to be a JSO cruiser.

Police are expected to give a briefing on the investigation at 8 p.m.
