JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One person is dead and five others were taken to a hospital following a crash on Interstate 295 northbound near the Old St. Augustine Road exit.
Just before 11:30 a.m. Monday, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said it responded to the crash involving an RV that flipped with multiple people inside.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the RV — driven by a 79-year-old man from Oxford, Kansas — was traveling north on I-295 when he lost control and hit a car.
Troopers said two people were thrown from the RV when it overturned on its side. One of the RV’s passengers, a 48-year-old Tulsa, Oklahoma man, died at the scene.
He was not wearing a seat belt, according to FHP.
The RV’s driver is expected to be OK. The three other passengers, Kansas men ranging in age from 61 to 75, were seriously hurt.
A 65-year-old Jacksonville woman who was driving the car has minor injuries.
The crash shut down northbound traffic in the area for hours, but Action News Jax saw that multiple cars were able to get by using the nearby express lanes.
