Jacksonville police working to ‘proactively’ address street racing concerns, representative says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — Tires squealed, engines revved and fireworks shot off during car meetups this past weekend in Baymeadows, including one at the intersection of Southside and Baymeadows Saturday night. Neighbors said the car meetup lasted nearly an hour.

Video from another meetup shows police eventually breaking up a meeting at Southside and San Jose which also happened Saturday night.

Action News Jax reached out to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. A representative said, “This is an issue that has been gaining attention with citizens in the community, and we have been receiving complaints in recent weeks. We would always ask that citizens call if they see driving patterns that would constitute a danger to themselves or others. We are currently working on measures to proactively address these concerns in our community.”

“My baby woke up and I tried to put her back to sleep. But I just heard all the commotion and fireworks and tires screeching,” Rober Bieger, a Baymeadows neighbor, said.

Action News Jax reported last weekend after a 17-year-old was shot at a car meetup on the westside.

Mayor Lenny Curry addressed the concerns at a press conference Monday.

“We don’t accept living with it. I’ve talked to the sheriff about it and I know they’re on it,” he said.
