Pedestrian killed in crash on Jacksonville’s Southside was beloved teacher in Maryland

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman was killed in a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash at Gate Parkway and Southside Boulevard Thursday afternoon.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the pedestrian, later identified as 64-year-old Carrie Bier, died at the scene.

Police said at around 2:20 p.m. Thursday, they responded to a call about a fatal crash at Southside Boulevard and Gate Parkway.

According to FHP, Bier was crossing the street at the intersection when a Dodge truck hit her while trying to make a left turn.

Police said the driver immediately stopped and is cooperating with investigators.

Investigators are trying to figure out if Bier had the right of way as she was crossing the street and whether the pedestrian signal was showing.

The intersection is equipped with sidewalks, crosswalks and coordinated signals.

Police said charges may be issued once the investigation is finished. They don’t believe alcohol to be a factor, but are investigating that, as well.

Action News Jax learned Bier was a beloved high school teacher in Maryland.

Her family tells us she was down here for vacation and she was planning on retiring here at the end of the year.

Bier was a family and consumer science teacher at St. Charles High School in Maryland.

She had been teaching there for the last decade.

St. Charles High School sent a letter out to parents on Friday.

It says in part, “Members of the school system’s crisis support team are working with our staff and students today as we grieve the loss of Mrs. Bier."

Bier leaves behind a husband, two sons and a heartbroken community.
