JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Supervisor of Elections for Duval County has already ordered sanitation supplies to aid against the new coronavirus during early voting.
Mike Hogan, Supervisor of Elections told Action News Jax:
- Hogan said his office decided to order the supplies because of Monday’s news of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Florida.
- The Supervisor of Elections has ordered hand wipes and sanitizers for voters and staff.
- Additional sanitizers were ordered to wipe down the voting equipment every evening.
- Supplies were ordered for all 18 early voting locations.
“No one has instructed us to do that, but we’ve gone ahead and decided to just as an abundance of caution,” Hogan said.
He tells us the supplies should arrive by Friday and will be taken to all 18 early voting locations around the city as they come in.
Early voting in Jacksonville began Monday, March 2nd, and is scheduled to run through Sunday, March 15th. He tells us they’re taking action to keep voters motivated to go to the polls.
Voters like Ashley Reynolds say they’re grateful the elections office is acting.
“I love to know that they’re thinking about us too,” Reynolds said.
Hogan went on to say they’ve also ordered sanitizing supplies to wipe down voting machines at the end of every night.
Should COVID-19 concerns heighten in the future, he says his office has an emergency operations plan in place. He tells us the plan would need to be activated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), should the agency see fit.
“So, we have some written guidelines, primarily what you would see from the CDC,” said Hogan. “And we would implement those when the CDC has given us the go ahead.”
