2 people died after plane crashes on Jacksonville’s Westside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE 3:35 p.m.:

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said two people died after a single-engine aircraft crashed into a field near Herlong Recreational Airport on Jacksonville’s Westside.

The aircraft took off from Herlong Recreational Airport and was in the air for approximately 20 minutes before it crashed at approximately 11:06 a.m. Sunday, according to police.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating along with JSO’s homicide detectives. They are currently interviewing witnesses to try to determine what led up to the crash.

Investigators are also working to identify the two victims, the only two occupants onboard the plane.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has responded to a small plane crash at the Herlong Recreational Airport near Jacksonville Heights West.

Police have Parrish Cemetery Road blocked to all traffic except for residents.

Action News Jax is at the scene working to learn more.

Police are expected to hold a news conference at 3:20 p.m.
