JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a person was shot after its SWAT team was called to a home on Caribbean Court in Arlington. Police had the neighborhood off Fort Caroline Road and Cesery Boulevard blocked off for hours.
JSO said the suspect was shot and killed. No officers were injured.
JSO news conference:
The Sheriff’s Office said today’s events started after a woman called police to report her ex-husband went inside her home and shot his gun inside the home. She said she was not inside home during this time. Police then arrived and took over the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office said it got an arrest warrant and search warrant for the home.
The Sheriff’s Office said the man walked out of the home and was acting erratically -- waving the gun around -- and then ran back inside the home.
Moments later, the man came back outside and pointed the gun at officers, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A 12-year-veteran with JSO fired one round at the suspect striking and killing him, JSO said.
This is the officers first officer-involved shooting, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is JSO policy.
Anthony Scruggs said he lives behind the home in question and was kept away from his home for hours.
He said SWAT formed on his roof.
“I was on the phone with my sister-in-law at the time when I heard the ‘pop.’ And I saw one of them move,” Scruggs said. “That’s how I knew I heard the shot.”
But Scruggs said this isn’t the first time JSO has been at this home.
“We had an officer come by saying they were investigating that same house, some stuff being stolen or something, would we give them permission to get in our backyard and look. We told them, ‘Sure” Scruggs said.
Action News Jax asked JSO Chief of Investigations T.K. Waters about that at Thursday night’s news conference.
“All of that, Russell, is still currently part of our investigation, and we’ll be able to weed all that information out as we continue to move forward,” Waters said.
