Email scammer posing as Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry

Scammers are using Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry’s identity to try and rip people off.

The email looks official and appears to be from MayorLennyCurry@COJ.net.

Action News Jax took the email to the city of Jacksonville and was told it’s not a valid email from mayor Curry’s account.

Catherine Hawkins said the email showed up in her inbox Friday.

The email said her credit card was charged $655 for her Mayor Lenny Curry account. It also included an invoice number and a link at the bottom to view the “receipt.”

“It seemed believable enough to click the button,” Hawkins said. “Hopefully I didn’t compromise anything.”

There is a red flag in the email, exposing that it’s a scam. The word “respectfully” was misspelled as “respectifully.”

The city said its Information Technology Department is aware of emails spoofing the mayor’s name as the sender and is looking into the matter.

If you get a similar email, do not click on any suspicious links and delete the message.
