The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating after an off-duty officer fatally struck a woman on I-295 and Lem Turner Road Sunday morning.
According to police, a JSO officer was driving home from work on I-295 northbound between Dunn Avenue and Lem Turner Road when the off-duty officer struck a person.
According to JSO, the off-duty officer and a witness who was with the victim said that the woman was laying on I-295 at the time she was struck by the car.
JSO emphasized in a statement that this is an area of I-295 that there is no lighting.
Traffic Homicide is investigating, according to JSO.
All I-295 westbound lanes at Dunn Avenue were shut down due to the crash until just after 7 a.m..
