“This project’s been in the makings for several years, we planned it,” Interim Deputy Fire Chief of Fernandina Beach Fino Murallo said. “We’ve been working in conjunction with the airport, make sureit’ss in compliance with certain FAA requirements.”

The new fire station includes state-of-the-art equipment, which Murallo told Action News Jax Saturday morning will help fire and rescue crews respond to emergencies quicker.

“This station being situated where it is on the island, we’re able to pick up more of the areas of the island and improve our response times for our citizens,” Murallo said.

Some of the upgrades are also included in the living quarters, where these firefighters both live and work each and every day.

“The conditions that they were living in before, they really deserved a new station. They’re the only group in the city that lives where they work,” new Fernandina Beach City Manager Sarah Campbell said.

Campbell said now, the department and city can finally celebrate an investment in the department, and the safety of the community.
