15-week abortion ban headed for final vote in Florida Senate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 15-week abortion ban with no exemptions for rape and incest is now teed up for a final vote on the Senate floor after being approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee Monday.

The full Senate could send the legislation to the Governor’s desk before the end of the week and Jacksonville residents have already taken notice.

While the abortion debate is raging in Tallahassee, we found every day Floridians aren’t so quick to weigh in on the topic.

Out of roughly 20 attempts to talk with locals, a few shared their thoughts and those opinions.

“I think it’s very concerning. Yeah, I don’t support it at all,” said Lisa, who declined to provide her last name.

Aisha Williams told us she believes the legislation is too extreme because it doesn’t include exemptions for rape.

“I don’t want somebody telling me what I can do with my body and then you all have to think about, like everybody’s situation is different, so what if I was raped?” said Williams.

Cesar González told us his Christian faith guides his stance on the issue.

“I oppose abortion. They have the right to live and if they don’t want it they can give them up for adoption. A lot of people are looking to adopt kids,” said González.

In a recent poll by Marquette Law School, around 28% stated that they were in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade and 72% oppose overturning it.

It’s yet to be seen how the legislation will impact the November election, but for voters like Aisha, it’s front and center.

“My eyes are open. I’m definitely paying attention,” said Williams.

The Governor has indicated he will sign the bill if it’s passed.

If the Senate doesn’t tag on any amendments, it could be on his desk by the end of the week.
