First sexually transmitted Zika case reported in Georgia

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Health (DPH) confirms the first sexually transmitted case of Zika virus in Georgia.

Officials say a woman was infected by a partner who had traveled to Brazil earlier this year.

The man was one of Georgia's known travel-related Zika cases.

According to DPH officials, Zika virus remains in semen for an unknown amount of time. A recent report cited by the DPH says the virus can remain in sperm for 62 days.

"If your partner has traveled to an area where Zika virus transmission is ongoing, protect yourself by abstaining from sex or using condoms during sex," said Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald.
