Fletcher Middle School teacher fired

Duval County Public Schools

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Duval County School Board voted to uphold a suspension without pay and ultimately fire Fletcher Middle School teacher Julie Bennett.  She taught social studies.

The investigation revealed Bennett laughed when a student called another student "fat."

Bennett's reaction, according to the investigation, caused other students to laugh.  The student felt embarrassed, according to the report.

District leaders cited other examples of Bennett making insensitive comments to other students.  The board ruled Bennett violated the Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional Conduct.

Bennett has been reprimanded before.  She received a 20-day suspension without pay in January 2013.

She also faced a reprimand for failing to report accusations of sexual battery on a female student in 2005.
