Freeze warning early Wednesday for inland areas of Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A freeze warning is in effect for portions of Georgia and Northeast Florida from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The freeze warning is for inland areas near and west of Interstate 95, Action News Jax First Alert Chief Meteorologist Mike Buresh said. The rest of our area will be under a frost advisory.

On Tuesday, we saw our first widespread freeze of the season at Jacksonville International Airport, just one week short of the latest first freeze on record -- Jan. 25, 1975.

Buresh said JIA averages 15 freezes a season, so we’re way behind; the average time for our first freeze is Dec. 10.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 degrees are expected early Wednesday.

The setup tonight is even more favorable for widespread frost (lighter winds, more humidity) but winds at the beaches will become onshore toward morning, which will increase temperatures from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Our average lows are between 40 and 45 degrees, Buresh said, so we are 10 to 12 degrees below average, but way above record lows in the single digits and teens this time of year.

This freeze will give us a brief reprieve from pine pollen, but some fruit trees and shrubs are already in bloom and are likely to take a hit this week and with subsequent freezes over the next four weeks.

Buresh said this is not a pipe-bursting freeze, but look out for pets and plants and be careful with space heaters and fireplaces.
