JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — If you live in Duval, you know 904 is almost synonymous with Jacksonville.
But with the population growing, Florida’s Public Service Commission is coming up with other alternatives.
In the next two years, instead of 904, you may have to dial 352 or 386 to reach someone in Jacksonville. The public service commission is recommending six total options. Five of those would allow customers to keep their existing numbers. The recommended option would simply assign a new area code to new numbers.

“I think that’s crazy. I think that’s really crazy. Like, 904 is definitely Jacksonville,” said Latoya Carter, who moved from Chicago to Jacksonville two years ago. She and Amee Teal moved here and got their number switched to 904. “I felt like a part of Jacksonville,” Teal remarked.
“They’re gonna miss out on that, being a part of the original Duval crew,” Teal remarked.
“I’ve had 386, that’s like Volusia county, that’s Daytona, so I wouldn’t want that for Jacksonville,” Carter added.
The last option would be keeping 904 for Jacksonville, and forcing existing surrounding customers to get a new area code.
For now, both these women are glad to hold on to their 904 phone number.
A tentative date for a Commission decision on the 904 Overlay Plan is May 3. For more information click here.
