WARE COUNTY, Ga. — It’s not often that it snows in Southeast Georgia, with the last accumulation of snow in Ware County back in January 2018.

“Pretty much the whole town shut down,” Waycross neighbor Austin Thrift said Monday. “You want it to, cause pretty much nobody here knows how to drive in it.”

Now, the First Alert Weather Team is forecasting two plus inches of snow in Waycross and parts of Ware County, with Brunswick and Glynn County looking at around a quarter inch of frozen rain overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. That could create dangerous conditions on Georgia roadways.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has now already begun prepping the roads with a saltwater mix aimed at decreasing the amount of ice on the roadways.

“[We’ve completed] all of I-95 in Georgia, I-16, and I-516 which is in Savannah, Georgia,” Jill Nagel with the Georgia Department of Transportation told Action News Jax on Monday. “They are doing bridges, overpasses, and interchange ramps, to make sure … well, we’re trying to be proactive before the storm comes in.”

Now, Nagel said they’ll be ready to mobilize Wednesday during and after the storm, clearing roads of ice and snow, with one main message to Georgia residents:

“If all possible, stay at home. This gives us less congestion so we can get out and treat those roadways,” Nagel said.

Glynn County emergency management officials also told Action News Jax they’ll be monitoring the storm closely and will announce any closures if necessary.
