Girl Scouts of Gateway Council to sell Girl Scout Camp in Middleburg

The Girl Scouts of Gateway Council has told Action News Jax reporter Russell Colburn that it is selling a local camp in Middleburg.

Colburn is working to learn what this means for local girl scouts and a local county commssioners concerns -- watch the full report on FOX30 at 10

What we know:
  • The council says the mortgage on the camp limits it from making other investments.
  • The summer camp programming won't be affected, according to the council.

The Girl Scouts of Gateway Council sent Colburn this statement:

The  Girl Scouts of Gateway Council owns several outdoor properties in Northeast Florida including North Fork Girl Scout Camp in Middleburg.

The challenges of owning and maintaining several properties requires us to take a closer look at the mortgage cost associated with North Fork Girl Scout Camp.  The mortgage limits the organization from investing in programming for girls and investing in capital improvements at our other properties. The property in Middleburg was marketed with an option for Girl Scouts of Gateway Council to leaseback the developed camp area. We were successful in identifying an investor to assume the mortgage and allows the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council to continue to offer the same robust outdoor programs. Summer camp programming and use of North Fork by our Girl Scouts will not be affected.

Our priority is to continue to provide the best outdoor and camp programming opportunities for girls and to ensure Girl Scouting remains strong for future generations. We know this decision will strengthen Girl Scouting in our area by helping us use resources wisely to better serve girls with the 21st century leadership programming they want today.
