Girls Inc. of Jacksonville helping young girls in underserved communities combat stereotypes

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — Girls Inc. of Jacksonville, a local after school program, is helping young girls at Title 1 schools combat alarming statistics such as teen pregnancy, high school dropouts and drug use.

Action News Jax investigator Meghan Moriarty looked into the common issues kids in low income areas face and the how the program is changing stereotypes.

The program has been around for years, but recently partnered with Humana, a health care company, to start a healthy living program for young girls in Jacksonville.

There are currently 100 girls enrolled in the after school program that addresses safe sex, saying ‘no’ to drugs and putting girls on the right path to graduate high school.

William M. Raines High School, Sandalwood High School, Edward H. White High School as well as a a middle school and a handful of elementary schools are offering the program.
