GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — The Glynn County sheriff is among those who've been targeted by a telephone scam.
Sheriff E. Neal Jump did not fall for the scam, but he is now taking to social media to warn locals to be careful.
According to Jump, it starts with a phone call. The scammer claims to be a deputy with the Glynn County Sheriff's Office and makes you believe you failed to appear in court and a warrant has been issued for your arrest.
The scammer asks for you to obtain a Green Dot card and pay a sum of money to avoid arrest.
Jump recently was among the locals who received the scam phone call. He took to the Glynn County Sheriff's Office Facebook page to warn residents about the scam.
"We are working very hard with the Marshalls to locate and arrest these criminals," he wrote. "That is what they are, too lazy to work and trying to STEAL money from hard working people like us."
Jump is warning residents to hang up if they receive a call like this. He said the Sheriff's Office does not conduct business that way.
Some locals were surprised to learn the sheriff was targeted by the scammers.
"That shows how stupid they are," said Laura Hanel, Glynn County resident.
But they hope it will help land the criminals behind bars.
"Glad that he picked up," said Ruth Coe, Glynn County resident.
The sheriff said the scam is also impacting other Georgia and Florida counties.
If you receive a scam call, you're asked to report it to the Glynn County Sheriff's Office or your local law enforcement agency.
