Counting the votes in some other parts of Georgia may be laboriou s— but in Glynn County, votes from all 20 of the precincts were in before 9 p.m Tuesday.
Supervisor of Elections Christopher Channell told Action News Jax’s Courtney Cole, that they had a very smooth day.
According to numbers Channell gave Cole on Tuesday night, incumbent Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler both held 25% leads over their Democratic challengers, Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock.
“Thank you for showing up to the polls and making your voices heard, because that is very important,” Channell said.
After a long day on Tuesday, Supervisor of Elections Channell is now looking ahead to the next steps.
“Next thing we do, tomorrow [Wednesday] morning — I’ll start looking at the provisional ballots that were cast. I’m not sure how many we have, probably 30 to 40 total,” Channell told Action News Jax.
37,444 ballots were cast, with 59.61% turnout — and for a runoff election, that’s a big deal.
“I was expecting kind of the same turnout — less percentage wise — than what we got for the November election. But we actually exceeded what we did on the November 3rd, Election Day,” said Channell.
The large turnout was due in part to voters like Michelle LeCounte and Regina Fleming.
“Our vote, either my vote or her vote, could be the determining factor,” LeCounte and Fleming explained to Cole, together.
The momentum in turnout also came from people who believe the way to make impactful change happen — is through the ballot box.
“If you have the opportunity to vote and don’t, how can you say well, ‘you know, why do they do this, why do they do that?’ This gives you a voice,” Fleming said.
And as we await a final result, voters are now hoping for bipartisan cooperation in the days to come.
“My hope for that, too, is that after today, we can all find a way to communicate and to find unity together and to talk to each other,” said Jennifer Waters.
Channell told Cole they’re planning to have the final totals, next Tuesday night.
