U.S. Navy commissions new littoral combat ship USS Savannah

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The U.S. Navy commissioned a new littoral combat ship on Saturday, named USS Savannah. The commissioning ceremony was held in Brunswick, Georgia.

USS Savannah is the sixth navy ship named after the city of Savannah and the 14th Independence-variant littoral combat ship.

“The ship and her crew will carry on the legacy of the five other ships that had the honor to bear the name Savannah since 1798,” said Naval Air Systems Command Vice Adm. Carl Chebi.

“They participated in the Mexican War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. The 6th USS Savannah’s history has yet to be written but will be enriched in stories of honor, courage, and commitment.”

The Navy said the ship is “fast, agile and designed to operate in near-shore environments while capable of open-ocean tasking.”

USS Savannah will set sail for California to join other navy ships following the commissioning ceremony. Check out the photos from the ceremony below.
