Gov. Desantis responds to questions about Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels

Earlier this month, an Action News Jax public records request revealed a 400-page internal affairs investigation into Jacksonville Sheriff's Office corrections officer Cierra Smith.

Smith and Sheriff Darryl Daniels admitted to having a yearslong relationship that started when Daniels worked at the Duval County Jail. Smith was his subordinate.

Sheriff Daniels isn’t facing any charges, but the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it’s reviewing information from both JSO and the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Action News Jax asked Gov. Ron DeSantis if he believes Daniels is fit to serve Clay County.

"When I get information, I will look at it, and as you know, the governor has constitutional authority to deal with certain local officials, and countywide elected would be one, and there is certain things, if you fall into one of those, the governor has the power to take action,” DeSantis said.

Sheriff Daniels has yet to comment publicly about the relationship.

Action News Jax learned today he has resigned from the board of trustees of the Orange Park Medical Center.

DeSantis says he has not been given an official briefing regarding Daniels.

Action News Jax continues to try to speak with Sheriff Daniels, who has declined to comment. ​
