Jacksonville, Fla. — As of this week, Pfizer’s Coronavirus vaccine is now authorized for use in children as young as 12.
The authorization by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) expands the pool of eligible recipients to roughly 87% of the total U.S. population.
Pfizer is the first vaccine to gain authorization for younger Americans after it demonstrated in a March clinical trial that it was 100% effective in preventing COVID-19 in study participants who were ages 12 to 15 [1].
“CDC now recommends that this vaccine be used among this population, and providers may begin vaccinating them right away,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said in a statement.
Currently, both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are only authorized for people over the age of 18, so those younger must go to a site that provides Pfizer shots.

CVS says the Pfizer vaccine is now being offered in select CVS stores.
