JSO says the fire occurred roughly at around 6:00 a.m. this morning on West 30th Street.

Action News Jax Annette Guiterrez spoke with a neighbor who called 911, who recalled seeing the home fully engulfed in flames.

“My dog was barking this morning when I came down here, I peaked through the blinds and saw the house was on fire,” says Leonard Patterson, who lives across the street. “By the time I got back out the second time, the roof on the house was ablaze”

Patterson says that JFRD crews responded within minutes to his call, however, a man and a woman inside the residence did not make it out. Neighbors say that the couple that passed had lived in that home for more than 20 years, and they said they also had a dog that survived.

While this fire is still under investigation by JFRD, JSO, and the State Fire Marshal, it is suspected that there has been no foul play.

While yet to be confirmed, neighbors have begun regarding the safeness and usage of space heaters.

“The cords get real soft and just melt, you can’t go to sleep with them on,” says neighbor Julius Merrill.

Action News Jax has told you about several fires just this week, including a fire in Mandarin where a boy died and a fire in Durkeeville where 3 people were injured.
