‘I was cold’: Homeless Orange Park man arrested for burning mall cushions

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — A homeless man was arrested Tuesday after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office says he was caught burning outdoor seating cushions at the Orange Park Mall.

According to the arrest report, Marcus Mattox was seen on surveillance video outside of the food court entrance stealing cushions from a bench. He was then seen putting them in the fire pit and lighting them on fire.

The responding deputy says that Mattox told him “I’m sorry, I was cold, I will pay for it”. After being read his Miranda Warnings, Mattox again admitted that he started the fire because he was cold.

Security says the burned cushions were worth approximately $600.

He’s charged with vandalism worth over $200 dollars.
