WATCH LIVE: City Council to discuss removing Confederate statues from public property
A group advocating to keep Confederate statues in Jacksonville is urging officials to allow people to vote on the issue.
Save Southern Heritage held a conference in Jacksonville on Tuesday.
They said the statues were erected in public places for a reason, and that people should be allowed to vote on the issue.
City Council is expected to discuss the statues at a meeting Tuesday evening.
Save Southern Heritage plans to be at the meeting.
Ben Frazier of the Northside Coalition of Jacksonville, a civil rights advocacy group, is calling for a peaceful protest and dialogue about the issue.
“Our coalition of grassroots organizations is founded on principles of non-violence and we will conduct ourselves in a peaceful manner," Frazier said. "We hope that these white racist groups don’t intend to bring their brand of Charlottesville violence to Jacksonville."
