According to fire fighters at the scene, crews responded at 7 a.m. to 6900 Main Street after spotting the fire on the way back to the station from a medical call.

Fire fighters believe that the fire was caused by a spark inside the storage closet on the first floor of the church. They were able to stop the fire from reaching the attic and the building attached by a breezeway, but it did reach the second floor. No injuries have been reported.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.

JFRD spokesman Capt. Eric Prosswimmer told Action News Jax that if the fire had happened in the middle of the night when no one was around, both buildings would probably be lost.

The northbound lanes of Main Street are blocked off, and there is no estimated time for reopening. Drivers should expect delays in the area.

Action News Jax’s Jessica Barreto is at the scene working to learn more.
