Jacksonville, Fla. — UPDATE: 8:03 p.m. Officer Wilson’s health status has been upgraded by his doctors according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE 5:04 p.m. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has identified the officer involved in the crash as Detective Ernest Wilson who has served for 20 years.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Officer Wilson has been arrested for Driving Under the Influence.

ORIGINAL STORY: A tragic turn of events at the scene of a deadly hit-and-run.

Officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to the 5700 block of New Kings Road just after midnight Saturday after a 30-year-old man was found dead in the middle of the street, according to JSO.

As police investigated what was declared a fatal hit-and-run, investigators say a driver struck an officer who was standing outside his patrol car.

The JSO officer was transported by JFRD to a local hospital and is listed in critical condition. The officer’s name has not yet been released.
