JSO: Teen found fatally shot in home on Jacksonville's Westside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville teenager was found fatally shot inside her own home, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said. JSO said they responded to the 9500 block of Watershed Drive East shortly after 1 p.m. Friday in reference to a shooting.

Action News Jax reporter Christy Turner spoke with family members of the victim. They tell her the victim was 17-year-old Alayshia Powe. Turner says the family is shocked and devasted and they say they don’t have much information from police.

Powe was going to be a senior at Ed White High School.

Karen Hardge was the teen’s aunt. She’s remembering the teen as a bubbly person with a beautiful spirit.

“It was a senseless killing,” Hardge said. “There was no reason for her to have to die like this.”

During the briefing, police did not give a suspect description.

Hardge said police told the family they have a person in custody. Action News Jax reached out to JSO to confirm.

While it won’t mend their broken hearts, Hardge said it brings the family some comfort.

“Even though our hearts are breaking right now we’re just going to continue to embrace each other and love each other and just stay strong,” Hardge said.
