Kingsland families struggling to recover after mobile homes destroyed in fire

KINGSLAND, Ga. — Four neighbors in Kingsland, Georgia are still displaced after a fire destroyed two mobile homes. The families said it engulfed both trailers within minutes.

They suspect the fire was due to an electrical issue.

Action News Jax Shanila Kabir spoke with the two families who said it has been difficult losing their homes amid a winter that has had more freezes than any years since 2010-2011.

The fire began at William Richardson’s mobile home. He said he lived there for at least 35 years and saw all of it melt away almost instantly.

“It’s worse to panic. I told the boy across the road to call 911 my trailer is on fire,” said William Richardson, Kingsland resident.

Richardson said the fire broke out a little before 8 PM last Friday night when he heard a loud “boom” from the back of his trailer. When he went to check, he said the fire was already swallowing his bedroom.

“In a mobile home, you don’t have time to get nothing. The only thing you have time for is to get you out of there,” said Richardson.

Next door, just twenty feet away- Tonisha Bacon said her family immediately ran out when they saw the fire getting closer.

“When I looked on the ground, the fire was coming like when you pour gas. It was like coming towards my house from his house in a trail of fire,” Tonisha Bacon, Kingsland resident.

Both families were displaced on the 17th just days before the winter storm hit South Georgia. Since then, they said neighbors and the entire community have been beyond supportive with donations and a GoFundMe.

“His school came through, they were the first to come through and help give him clothes,” said Bacon.

No injuries were reported in the fire.

The damage estimate is still unknown. However, both families have confirmed the two mobile homes are not salvageable.
