Lake City man arrested after police say he used soda bottles, chemicals to make explosive devices

LAKE CITY, Fla. — Officers responding to its gunshot detection system early Sunday found out their system wasn’t triggered by gun fire. While attending to the scene in the area of NE Jackson Avenue at about 2:30 a.m., officers heard a loud explosion, a Lake City police news release states.

They investigated where it came from and saw gray smoke coming from the yard of a vacant home, the news release states. Officers then found the source of the smoke - a melted plastic soda bottle. They then found additional melted plastic soda bottles in the yard also emanating gray smoke, the news release states.

The officers called in the Lake City Fire Department because of the presence of hazardous chemicals, the news release states. Officers then evacuated an adjacent property on NE Jackson Avenue as a precaution.

“The investigation revealed that Matthew Paul Mixon had mixed two chemical compounds inside the plastic soda bottles, shaken them, and thrown them into the neighboring yard to observe the explosions,” the news release states. “Mixon was arrested and transported to the Columbia County Detention Center.

Mixon, 35, was charged with Make or Attempt to Make Destructive Device and Disturbing the Peace, the news release states.
