LaShonda Holloway first candidate to announce run for new congressional District 4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — LaShonda Holloway is the first candidate to officially announce she plans to run for Jacksonville’s new congressional district.

Holloway made the announcement during a press conference held by local Democrats speaking out against the new congressional maps Friday.

They argued the new Republican-leaning district that will replace the current minority access district CD 5 will silence the voices of Duval’s Black voters.

Holloway, a Black Democrat, had planned to run for Congressman Al Lawson’s seat, but she said she’ll now file to run in the new CD 4, which consists of parts of Nassau, Clay, and Duval.

Despite the new district-leaning Republican, Holloway said she believes she can win against whomever her Republican challenger may be.

She said many of the issues facing Jacksonville’s urban core are the same faced by residents in the surrounding counties.

“We care about access to health care, we care about affordable housing, we care about the rising cost of property insurance, we care about criminal justice reform. Those are issues that are important and we need to elect people who care about our issues and who have the political courage to stand up to a bully,” said Holloway.

No Republicans have officially announced a run for the seat, although Mayor Lenny Curry made it clear he won’t be running on Thursday.

We’ll know all the candidates when qualifying ends on June 17th.
