“People down here aren’t used to this type of cold so it’s very important that you layer,” local homeowner Kim Pryor said.

This is the first step that people are taking to protect themselves during frigid conditions in Springfield and across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia

“I am covering my plants as I’ve been instructed to by the weatherman,” local homeowner Sharon Cooper said.

The Action News Jax First Alert Weather Team says plants, particularly sensitive ones, should be covered with blankets or moved indoors to avoid the cold snap’s damaging effects.

Cooper has a sign outside her house that expresses her love for her pets and plants.

When it comes to pipes, people have been insulating exposed ones, especially those in older homes.

“My other house I turned the water on and let it drip,” Cooper said.

“I do drip my water to prevent the freezing,” Pryor said.

As for pets, many are bringing them inside or making sure they have warm shelters if they need to stay outdoors.

“They sleep with me. They’re in where the heat is,” Pryor said.

While these measures are relatively easy to implement, they could make all the difference during this frosty weather like we’re seeing now.

And remember, it’s not just about staying warm yourself: it’s about ensuring everything you care for is well-protected too.
