HASTINGS, Fla. — The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man within 30 minutes after police arrived at the scene.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a scene Tuesday night around 10:19 p.m. They received a 911 call where the witness said Derrek Perkins had stabbed the victim and then fled. The victim was found on the front porch with multiple stab wounds and died at the scene.
According to the police report, detectives interviewed a witness who said they heard screaming and a banging on the front door. The witness told police that they saw the victim in a pile of blood and Perkins was running across the porch and down the stairs. That’s when the witness called the police.
Another witness told police that they picked up the victim from work and was dropping them off at their house. They circled the house, looking for Perkins' car, but when they deemed it safe, the witness parked across the street and walked with the victim to the house. When the victim walked up the stairs on the porch, and the witness was closing a pet gate, Perkins allegedly pushed past the witness and ran towards the victim. In fear of their own safety, the witness hid until after Perkins allegedly drove away. The witness then told police that they tried to perform CPR on the victim.
Police found Perkins around 10:32 p.m. in the area of State Road 207 and Morrison Road. The police report states that Perkins had blood on his legs.
On Friday, Perkins allegedly tried to run the victim over with his car as the victim walked across a parking lot. Perkins was charged with aggravated assault. On Monday, the victim obtained an injunction against Perkins, but it had not yet been served. Earlier on Tuesday, Perkins was being charged with theft after stealing items from the victim’s place of employment.
Perkins, 41, is being charged with First-Degree Murder. He is on no bond, according the the jail log.
