The Bradford County Sheriff's Office announced a deputy involved shooting at residence near NW 216th Street outside of Lawtey.
BCSO said it was called to a residence regarding a man experiencing mental issues.
According to BCSO, when two deputies arrived and attempted to make contact with 39-year-old Anthony Lee Hodges, he was armed with a rifle and began opening fire.
The deputies used their vehicles for cover and returned fire, hitting Hodges, according to BCSO.
The deputies gave Hodges first aid until EMS arrived, where he was then take to a local hospital, BCSO said.
Hodges was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to BCSO.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be investigating.
