Police said they received multiple calls about a shooting around 11:45 a.m. Sunday morning.

Once they arrived at the homeless shelter at 611 E. Adams Street, police found a man in his late 20s who had been shot multiple time. In a briefing just before 4 p.m., officials revealed the male suspect had walked up to him outside the shelter before firing.

According to JSO, the victim and the suspect appear to have known each other, and there shouldn’t be any further threat to the public.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and the shelter was temporarily shut down.

Police are gathering and looking through surveillance video from the area to help identify witnesses and the suspect.

In a statement to Action News Jax, Sulzbacher says its committed to security at both of its campuses.

“Sulzbacher takes the security of the people we serve and of our staff very seriously,” said a spokesperson. “We have 24 hour security at both of our campuses. The incident that happened today is extremely distressing and has never happened before. We are grateful to JSO for their very quick response to the situation. We will continue to cooperate closely with them to ascertain why this happened and ways that we can prevent anything like this from happening again.”

Sulzbacher says it will still operate as a cold night shelter Sunday. The Urban Rest Stop will reopen Monday.
