Marineland mourns loss of beloved dolphin, Stan

Stan

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Marineland announces the loss of their rough-toothed dolphin, Stan.

According to Marineland, Stan was a 6-year-old dolphin who was deemed non-releasable by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration due to hearing loss. The facility said Stan was well acclimated, eating well and behaving normally until about Dec. 8 when he was uninterested in food.

Marineland said the following morning, Stan died.

“Now that we have medical results, we can say that the postmortem exam showed that Stan died from pneumonia of unknown origin and that the infection evolved rapidly. Despite the efforts and medicines, we were not able to fight the disease. Even though Stan was in a safe home being well cared for, his instincts likely hid the severity of his illness from his caretakers until it was too late. He was loved and cherished and will be greatly missed” said DVM Julie Cavin, Senior Veterinarian in Marineland.
