A Jacksonville mother said her 5-year-old son was able to wander away from school.
Action News Jax is investigating what happened.
Schmiora Hill said her son’s grandfather showed up to pick him up and that’s when the school realized he was gone.
Hill said on Friday, her 5-year-old son was able to walk away from Sallye B. Mathis Elementary School.
She said he made his way to their home on Cavalier Road. He got his bicycle and then rode it more than a mile towards Soutel Drive.

“No matter if my child was walker, car rider or a daycare walker or whatever. He should not have been able to get out that gate. He’s five years old,” said Hill.
Action News Jax reached out to Duval County Public Schools. We were told that throughout the school year, Hill’s son was registered to go to afterschool daycare. And on the day he wandered off, he switched lines to be with kids who walk home.
DCPS said once the school realized he was missing, a search was immediately started. He was found on campus after the school’s physical education teacher picked him up down the street and brought him back.
Regardless, Hill said her son never should have gotten past the school's gate.
