Nassau County mom says her daughter was told tank top 'distracts boys' at school

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — A Nassau County mom is outraged after she said her 9-year-old daughter was body shamed.

"They had her wear a hoodie to cover up," Kate Darrow said.

She told Action News Jax that the Callahan Intermediate School student was told she can't wear a tank top that shows her shoulders. The reason: because "it distracts boys."

"Right there, I knew that that was an issue," Darrow said. "It's 2019 and that's not something I want my daughter to be taught."

Instead of calling the school, Darrow took a different approach.

"My friend Sarah and I were talking about it [the dress code violation] and we just kind of decided to come up with the T-shirts and do a peaceful protest against it," Darrow said.

Her daughter, son and their friends created homemade shirts and wore them to school Monday. Her daughter's shirt said, "Right to bare shoulders," and the boys' shirts said, "Real men aren't distracted by shoulders."

"Hopefully, it makes people start thinking." Darrow said.

Kate Darrow and her husband, Rob, believe the school's dress code is outdated.

"I think we're sending the wrong messages." Rob Darrow said. "These are archaic rules. There's tradition that passed them on."

Action News Jax reached out to Callahan Intermediate School for comment. We left a message with the assistant principal, but have not heard back.
