KINGS BAY, Ga. — The U.S. Navy is relieving a commander of duty because of what's being called a $1 million mistake.
Capt. Dave Adams commanded the Santa Fe from 2010 to 2012, earning the Battle “E”—or Battle Effectiveness award, given to the best ship in the organization before taking command of the USS Georgia, a guided missile submarine out of Kings Bay.
The USS Georgia was returning to its homeport on Nov. 25 when it struck a channel buoy and grounded, causing $1 million in damage.
The incident is still under investigation, but Adams has taken full responsibility for the incident.
