Owner of Grumpy’s in Middleburg talks path forward after fire

Action News Jax at 5 Grumpy's plans to make repairs, reopen after fire

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — Grumpy’s, a popular eatery in Middleburg is taking steps to reopen after a devastating fire last month.

Owner Dell Hoard says an electrical issue was to blame. “We were thankful for no injuries, nothing like that,” he told Action News Jax.

A couple of weeks ago, Action News Jax showed you the damage inside -- a total loss. Almost immediately employees and managers were together cleaning up what they could.

Hoard is making sure his roughly 40 employees don’t go without a job. “We have some that are working at the Grumpy’s in Orange Park or in the St. Johns location,” he said.

Some locals even left signs on the business’ front door saying “we love you, Grumpy’s” and “we’re praying for you”.

For now, Hoard is waiting on the insurance company to give him the green light to start rebuilding. He hopes to have Grumpy’s back up and running in the coming months -- stronger than before.
