JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The search is on for a suspect who police say hit and killed a woman and left the scene early Thursday morning in Jacksonville.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded just before 6:30 a.m. to the crash in the 8300 block of New Kings Road near the Malabar Motel.
JSO said a woman was found on the shoulder of the roadway. She died at the scene.
Yvette Slay, who is staying right across the street from where the accident occurred, says she’s the one who first contacted police.
“I happened to see the traffic slowing down,” Slay said.
Slay told Action News Jax that she could hardly believe it when she saw the reason for the delay.
"The body was on the side of the road, dead completely dead. Didn’t budge, didn’t move.”
The exact time of the crash is unknown and the victim has not been identified, JSO said.
There is no suspect or it is not known what type of vehicle was involved. JSO said the vehicle should have damage to the front end, hood and windshield.
"It’s kind of scary to know that so many people ride their bikes and walk up and down there," said Slay. "I’ve rode my bike up and down."
Police are continuing to investigate.
Anyone who has any information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS. You can remain anonymous.
