The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) is recalling dozens of its aerosol dry shampoo and conditioner spray due to the presence of a cancer-causing chemical.
Products included in the recall include Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences, and Waterl<ss produced in the United States, in addition to previously discontinued aerosol dry shampoo products from Old Spice and Hair Food, due to the presence of benzene.
Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening.
According to the American Cancer Association, benzene is among the 20 most widely used chemicals in the U.S. It is used mainly as a starting material in making other chemicals, including plastics, lubricants, rubbers, dyes, detergents, drugs, and pesticides.
The company said it has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall and has acted out of an abundance of caution.
