Sgt. Mark Lessard with Jacksonville’s Homicide Unit said officers responded to the area of 2200 Old Middleburg Road for an “undetermined death” after two people fishing at a retention pond found human remains.

When officers arrived they found a body badly decomposed.

“Down to the skeleton,” Sgt. Lessard said about the condition of the remains. “It’s been here for an extended period of time.”

Currently, police don’t know what led to the death or if foul play was involved. They are waiting for the medical examiner to make that determination.

Sgt. Lessard did say that there is a homeless camp nearby but couldn’t confirm if the remains found were related.

If you happen to have information on this incident you are asked to contact JSO at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-TIPS (8477).
