Florida officials deny reports of riot at Hamilton Correctional Institution

The Florida Department of Corrections said Friday that "a number of inmates began acting out and became noncompliant" in the Hamilton Correctional Institution on Friday.

"Institutional response teams immediately responded, and due to their swift and methodical approach, the situation was brought under control with no injuries to staff or inmates," officials said. "Outside law enforcement responded in an abundance of caution to secure the perimeter and never entered the secure facility."

WCTV in Tallahassee reported on Friday that a large fight broke out between inmates in a recreation yard of the Hamilton Correctional Institution.

The prison is about 90 minutes northwest of Jacksonville.

Law enforcement agencies across the state responded to assist, the TV station said. One viewer told Action News Jax that she saw over a dozen state troopers speeding west on I-10.

The Hamilton County sheriff told the TV station that dozens of officers were surrounding the area where the incident took place.
