Reports: Amtrak passenger train makes abrupt, unscheduled stop in Jacksonville Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A passenger train made abrupt stop to avoid hitting a car in Jacksonville Sunday, according to a report from a passenger onboard the train.

Chuck Leusner says passengers were eating dinner on the Amtrak train coming from Orlando, Florida when it came to a screeching halt. He says passengers were told the train stopped because it came very close to hitting a car that was on the tracks; but it did not hit.

He says the train stopped at 5:45 p.m. and was stopped for several hours.

Leusner said an announcement was made that the train had to be inspected to be determined safe before it could continue to its destination.

Leusner said there were over 400 passengers onboard the train.

Action News Jax has reached out to Amtrak, CSX, and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for information.

Amtrak released a statement saying, "Train 52 is running now, but it (was) delayed by about an hour and 45 minutes."
