St. Augustine Amphitheater doing well despite new competition

New numbers show the St. Augustine Amphitheatre is doing better than ever.

It seems new competition only appears to be growing the local music community.

Nick Jones handles concessions at the amphitheatre.

He was well aware of concerns that Daily's Place would hurt business.

After all, it's the area's new toy, just opening last May, boasting 1,500 more seats.

“I thought there would be tears, between people wanting to go see this show versus that show, and it doesn't seem that's been the case,” Jones said.

In fact, St. Johns County's director of cultural events, Ryan Murphy, said the amphitheatre had a record-breaking 2017 with 34 of the 59 concerts selling out.

For perspective, the amphitheatre hosted 34 concerts in all of 2014.

This year, it's already ticketed 36 concerts.

In a statement, Murphy tells Action News Jax, “I have never seen Daily's [Place] as competition but rather as complementary to the market and truly believe that ‘a rising tide floats all ships.”

For Ed Baltzley, who runs The Bullet Street Food, a food truck just outside the amphitheatre, so this is all music to his ears.

“Our business is completely contingent on how busy they are, too, so high ticket sales usually means pretty good sales for us,” Baltzley said.
